Online Business Foundation

Now let’s talk about the foundation of your new business, you now have the idea, awesome. How can you transform that idea into a profitable online business. Here are basic steps to consider. What name are you going to call your new business? Some might say what’s in a name, I’ll just call it, whatever name just pops into my head. Is this a good Idea or a bad idea? Well think about it for a moment. If you wanted to open an online clothing store, would you name it Larry’s lawn repair. I know this is obvious but it proves a point. Your customers will identify the name with your brand. So your name of your business should have something about what your are selling, it make sense right. You can even name your business after a life style. For example there is a online clothing store called ulovetoshop.com. Here is the life style which is the brand, so it can work for you either way. Now if you are a designer that sells handbags and other accessories, then you can just use your name. For example Michael Kors, he sells designer handbags, shoes and things I can’t even think of at the moment. So your brand name to the internet would be called a domain name. This is how other computers can find you all over the world. You now have an address online. Welcome to the 21st century.

How Much Does a Domain Name Cost?

One of the first questions I get is how much is a domain name? Well, the answer to that question varies. These companies are called hosting companies, that’s where your domain name is located. Think of it this way when you buy a new car you have to get a license plate for it. The domain name is the identification or license plate for your website. Now you can buy that domain name for, 1 year 2 years are more. If you decide to only pay for 1 year, you must renew the domain name every year. The hosting company will send you a reminder in a email. If you fail to renew the domain name it can be bought by anyone. Just because you’ve had the name for a long time doesn’t mean someone else can’t take it from you. So this is critical. Some people have made a large sum of money, by getting domain names that big corporations just forgot to register. Those companies have to pay a hefti price, just to get their name back. So don’t fall into this category, keep track of you’re online asset.

A Domain name can be expensive, like I said it varies. If you go to Godaddy.com the popular domains that are available can start anywhere from 500 to 3,500 dollars or more. Now not to worry, these are the exceptions. These domains are very popular names. Very hard to come by. Thats a lot of money, but if you can afford it, the potential for web traffic is huge! But most of us won’t pay that kind of money for a domain name. The names that are available can cost anywhere from $1.99 to $200.00 or more. It all depends on the type of name that is available. How do you find good domain names?

There are several ways you can find good ones. Here is a trick you can use, go back to the Google Keyword planner and enter a name that reflects your business or service. It will come up with suggestions. Take those keywords and put them in the search at Godaddy.com. If one of those names that has a mid to low search volume per month, register that name. Notice I said mid to low volume keyword. Why? The reason is the high volume keywords are already taken. And If they’re not taken, that’s when the domain can cost as much as a used car, or a new car for that matter. You have a better chance with the mid range to lower volume keywords. If you choose any of those keywords they must have a volume of at least 200 visits per day.

Here is a list of Hosting companies I recommend.

1. Host Gator.com
2. Blue Host.com
3. eHost.com
4. iPage.com
5. Websitebuilder.com

Their monthly hosting can start really cheap but after the introductory offer, it will go up to $9.00 to $15.00 or more. A special note, watch companies especially when your about to check out. They have a habit of checking extra features that you really don’t need, so watch closely and only select what you need, not what they want you to have.

Skilled Help At A Good Price

I mention before in the first article, that you can’t do everything yourself. Some where down the road you’re going to need help. If you don’t have a lot of money to get certain things done, I have just the site you need to check out. Before I give you the website, here are the things you’re going to need help with.

1. Content Creation
2. Website Promotion
3. Social Media

The site that can help you with all of this is Fiverr.com Have you heard of it, if not let me explain what this site does. There are skilled people who will do Content Creation, Website Promotion, & Social Media and more, for a starting price of $5.00. Yes it’s true, but you must be careful using this site.

Not all contractors are created equal. Some are of course better than others. There is a rating system, the more stars a contractor has, the better they are. When you pay for a gig, that’s what they call the work being done, they ask you for specifics, depending on the task you asked them to do. They get it done in a certain amount of time, and give you a link when it’s done.

I have used them for voice overs for commercials, and SEO. What’s that, we will talk about that in a future post. Here is a video that explains how it works so have a look to get a better understanding of Fiver.

In the next post we will answer this question: What is a Autoresponder and why do I need one?

That’s it for now
